Life & Real Estate Nearby Lake Louisa State Park: Clermont’s Scenic Wonder

Nestled in the sloping hills of Lake County, Florida set apart from the rest of the state by its elevated location lies the beautiful city of Clermont, a French name which loosely translated means "bright or clear hill."

The city is also known as the "gem of the hills" and was once a prominent place for Florida's citrus industry. Although much of Clermont has now been developed and is home to more than 30,000 residents, there are many parts of Clermont that remain relatively untouched.

Most notably, one such part of Clermont is Lake Louisa State Park, a true natural wonder where residents and visitors alike can partake in a host of recreational activities and glimpse wildlife, plants, and spectacular views year-round. Here's a look at the local hotspot and how it's helping drive so many residents to find their next home for sale in Clermont, Florida.

How the Park Came to Be

In 1823, the Treaty of Moultrie Creek made today's Lake Louisa State Park area part of a Seminole Indian Reservation. However, the area was not suitable for herding and farming which caused it to sit unused and unoccupied until 1910 when John and Louise Driggors Hammond settled the land.

In 1943, some of the land was established for citrus groves and a cattle ranch by the Bronson family and it was officially purchased by the state of Florida in 1973. Lake Louisa State Park opened to the public in 1977.
