Being a homeowner in Orlando has its perks! Getting a free tree is one of them!
It's all part of the Green Works Orlando Action Plan and the One Person, One Tree Program. Mayor Buddy Dyer commissioned a special program in 2015 to increase The City Beautiful's "urban canopy" or tree coverage.
The program provides homeowners with free trees – that's right – free trees!
The One Person, One Tree Program helps to reduce the heat in the city, produce cleaner air, and strengthen our city’s wildlife habitats.
We reached out to the City of Orlando for the inside scoop:
"In 2013 the city set a tree canopy goal of 40% by 2040. Programs offered through One Person One Tree will help each person take the individual action of planting a tree so that together we can reach that goal. Trees are still available through www.arborday.org/cityoforlando,"
Ian M. Jurgansen, Sustainability Project Manager, City of Orlando
For homeowners, having healthy trees, planted in the right places around their home has several surprising benefits:
The City of Orlando’s website provides in depth information on how to qualify for your free tree. There's also an online tool detailing how to choose a tree, where to plant a tree, and how to care for the tree.
Don't own a home? You can even have a tree planted somewhere in Orlando and dedicated in your name or someone else's!
As a homeowner, you can choose from a variety of canopy or understory trees and have your free tree shipped directly to your front door!
Whether you are looking to improve your curb appeal, do your part to improve the environment, or enjoy the shade on a sunny afternoon, the One Person, One Tree program is a definite perk to living in Orlando!
