The 10,000-square-foot estate was home to John B. Stetson, a 19th century entrepreneur, philanthropist, and 'hatter.'
Stetson, whose factory was in Philadelphia, chose DeLand for his winter estate. In addition to the mansion, the property included a schoolhouse for the Stetson sons, orange groves, and other crops.
The mansion was one of the world's first homes with an electric system, as Stetson was reportedly close friends with Thomas Edison. Said to also be friends with Henry Flagler, Stetson was able to have a railroad line built to the property!
Stetson became an important benefactor to what was then DeLand University (renamed Stetson University in 1889). He provided funding in 1886 for the school's dormitory called Stetson Hall.
Stetson was elected to the University's board of trustees in 1887 and served as a board member and president of the board until his death in 1906. in 1892, he built what has become Stetson University's 'Signature building' - Elizabeth Hall (pictured above), named after his wife.
His financial gifts to the school paid for many key elements in the University's growth. He also used his extensive business experience to guide the administration of the school. Stetson's impact on the school and the community can still be felt today through the remnants of historic architecture, culture, and charm.
