Predating the Civil War, the town of Fruitland Park is one of Central Florida's most precious secrets and has some gorgeous historic sites. It's known as "The Friendly City" where neighborhoods are canopied with oak trees and the Old Florida feel is blended in beautifully with the new.
Home to a quiet and tranquil community, Fruitland Park offers something truly special to its residents and visitors. Here's a closer look at the community & why it's such a sought-after city:
The Fruitland Park Name
The name Fruitland Park was given by one of its first settlers because of the many nurseries and groves in the area. However, it almost didn't stick!
From 1884-1888 the name of the city was changed to Gardenia at the postal authorities' request due to a similar town name already in the state. Fortunately, a railroad had already been put through 'Gardenia' prior to this name change, and all of the printed materials had 'Fruitland Park' on them.
During these four years, all freight had to be shipped to Fruitland Park while mail had to be addressed to Gardenia. As you can probably imagine, the confusion caused the name to eventually be changed back to the "Fruitland Park" we know and love today!
Location & Lifestyle
Fruitland Park is located just northeast of Orlando and southeast of The Villages, Florida. Only approximately 3 square miles, it's part of serene Lake County and is on the western side of Lake Griffin and a body of water called Dead River.
The town truly has a southern charm feel about it, and while it may be small, it's booming with lots of life.
